I am not sure how I feel about it. I was in the Marines; I stand for the flag. I understand some people want to protest, but there is a proper time and a place for that. You don't protest during the national anthem. However, how about kneeling for three minutes after it?

The flag is just a bit of cloth. An anthem just a song. What matters are values, and how we act upon them and respect them. If anything, kneeling during an anthem pays homage to those, like you, who fought for your country and its values. Values which Trump et al. are deconstructing or ignoring. Doing it during the anthem carries the biggest impact. Otherwise, it would be lost to a commercial break.

Peaceful protest in all forms should be allowed. It's part of what makes America great. Especially the ability to dissent against a tyrannical government.

I think they should stop playing the anthem before sporting events altogether.

Here something to think about. When you want to show respect, you kneel. I got down on one knee when I proposed to my wife. You get down on your knees when you pray.

Why is getting down on a suddenly disrespectful?

Excellent point, Roc. Facing the flag with one's hand over one's heart is a tradition, not a mandate. Why is kneeling seen as disrespectful? Because the opponents don't like the message. This hoopla has nothing to do with kneeling and everything to do with ideological conflict. How would those who oppose kneeling have responded had those on their knees said "We're exercising our right to religious freedom"? They'd have applauded.

The players, coaches, team owners, etc. who knelt two weeks ago wanted to make point. They made it and started a national dialogue (in the shrill tones that seem to have become de rigueur).

“[T]he fact that society may find speech offensive is not a sufficient reason for suppressing it. Indeed, if it is the speaker’s opinion that gives offense, that consequence is a reason for according it constitutional protection.” ---U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, writing for the majority in FCC v. Pacifica Foundation

This picture kind of says it all.... Kneeling is bad but Nazis are okay?

Lets back up a few steps and take a look at this.

Kneeling started when Obama was in office, so talk that it is about the presidency does not ring true.

The NFL is a non profit - 501c3, they are not allowed to do political stuff, for that they would need to be a 501c4. (Kneeling is a political protest according to what they are saying)

The players are at their place of employment, if the employer does not want them to kneel they can either respect the employers wishes or look for a new place to work.

Not exactly true. Only the NFL League Office was a tax-exempt organization. The league office gave up its tax-exempt status in 2015. The teams themselves are, and always have been, for-profit corporations.

501(c)(3) corporations are prohibited only from partisan campaigning, not from all "political stuff." For example, they can provide issues education and produce political debates as long as all viewpoints are represented.

As for NFL owners constraining their players' free speech, courts generally have held employers may limit employees' speech on the job. It's also worth noting that the First Amendment prohibits only the government from muzzling citizens. With few exceptions, private industry can allow or disallow whatever speech it chooses.

The kneeling had nothing to do with Obama. He had to do with one man protecting police brutality.
